In this course, students work directly with clients seeking to clean up their criminal records and re-enter society with the rights fully provided by law. Students will first receive instruction and orientation on Tennessee law and procedure related to the expungement of offenses from a person’s criminal record and other criminal reentry issues, such as driver license reinstatement and restoration of voting and other rights. Then, under the supervision of a Tennessee bar-licensed faculty member, students will work directly with clients seeking expungement of offenses or seeking advice and representation on other re-entry issues. Students will build their skills in interviewing, counseling, advocacy, and problem-solving. They will have multiple opportunities to perform lawyering tasks, self-evaluation, and receive feedback from their instructor.
Students must have completed 45 credit hours and be otherwise eligible for a student limited practice license under Tenn. Supreme Court Rule 7, Section 10.03.
