Policy Regarding Changing Student Status

Policy for Transfer Requests between the Traditional and Part-Time/Hybrid Options

The Lincoln Memorial University Duncan School of Law admits students to complete our J.D. program under one of two options: (1) a traditional, full-time option designed to allow students to earn their J.D. degrees in three years, primarily by taking traditional, in-person classes; and (2) a part-time/ hybrid option designed to allow students to earn their J.D. degrees in four years by taking a combination of distance education courses and residential classes held over long weekends. The structure and curriculum sequence for each program is described in further detail later in this Handbook. When students are admitted to the School of Law, they are admitted either as full-time students or as part-time/ hybrid students.

Prior to Fall 2022, the School of Law also admitted a small number of students as “flex-time” or “flex students,” who attended traditional, in-person classes but are expected to complete the J.D. program in four years.

I. Transfer from the Full-Time to the Part-Time/Hybrid Option

Enrollment in the Part-Time/Hybrid Option is limited to a set number of students. Students enrolled in the Full-Time Option may transfer to the Part-Time/Hybrid Option only if there are a sufficient number of vacant slots available.  Student requests for transfer will be referred to the Admissions Committee whose members will make decisions in consultation with the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs. Students seeking a transfer should submit a transfer application form to the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs.

II. Transfer from the Part-Time/Hybrid to the Full-Time Option

Because of limits by the American Bar Association on the number of distance education credits students may complete, transfer opportunities from the Part/Time Hybrid Option into the Full-Time Option will be limited. Assuming the availability of vacant slots, students who have not exceeded the allowable number of distance education credits may request transfer. Student requests for transfer from the Part-Time/Hybrid to the Full-Time Option will be referred to the Admissions Committee whose members will make decisions in consultation with the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs.
